چکیده

We review Maxwell’s multipole vectors, and elucidate some of their mathematical properties, with emphasis on the application of this tool to the cosmic microwave background (CMB). In particular, for a completely random function on the sphere (corresponding to the statistically isotropic Gaussian model of the CMB), we derive the full probability density function of the multipole vectors. This function is used to analyze the internal configurations of the WMAP3 quadrupole and octopole, and we show the observations are consistent with the Gaussian prediction. A particular aspect is the planarity of the octopole, which we find not to be anomalous.

Multipole vectors: A new representation of the CMB sky and evidence for statistical anisotropy or non-Gaussianity at 2ÏøÏ8

We propose a novel representation of cosmic microwave anisotropy maps, where each multipole order , is represented by , unit vectors pointing in directions on the sky and an overall magnitude. These ‘‘multipole vectors and scalars’’ transform as vectors under rotations. Like the usual spherical harmonics, multipole vectors form an irreducible representation of the proper rotation group SO(3). H...

Testing the statistical isotropy of large scale structure with multipole vectors

A fundamental assumption in cosmology is that of statistical isotropy—that the Universe, on average, looks the same in every direction in the sky. Statistical isotropy has recently been tested stringently using cosmic microwave background data, leading to intriguing results on large angular scales. Here we apply some of the same techniques used in the cosmic microwave background to the distribu...

The study of topology of the universe using multipole vectors

We studied possibility of application of the multipole vectors decomposition of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) maps for detection signatures of non-trivial topology of the universe. Using 10 simulations we analysed distribution of the multipole vectors on the sky for the low order multipoles and probability distribution function of the statistics based on the sum of the dot products of t...

Radical Compression of Cosmic Microwave Background Data

Powerful constraints on theories can already be inferred from existing CMB anisotropy data. But performing an exact analysis of available data is a complicated task and may become prohibitively so for upcoming experiments with & 10 pixels. We present a method for approximating the likelihood that takes power spectrum constraints, e.g., “band-powers”, as inputs. We identify a bias which results ...

Improved simulation of non–Gaussian temperature and polarization CMB maps

We describe an algorithm to generate temperature and polarization maps of the cosmic microwave background radiation containing non–Gaussianity of arbitrary local type. We apply an optimized quadrature scheme that allows us to predict and control integration accuracy, speed up the calculations, and reduce memory consumption by an order of magnitude. We generate 1000 non– Gaussian CMB temperature...
